A Unique Approach to Sixth Form Studies

Oxford Tutorial College offers a stimulating alternative to the traditional sixth form, providing an enormous subject range and no restrictions of a student’s subject choices

"We are so delighted and cannot thank you and the college enough for igniting this flame"

At Oxford Tutorial College, unusual subjects, such as Anthropology and Music Technology, are taught by engaging and dedicated teachers who are experts not only in their field but also in the requirements of A-level examiners.

A-level teaching is delivered through small seminar groups combined with individual tuition, allowing for effective syllabus coverage and careful guidance with each student’s understanding of material and production of written work. The teaching approach is refreshingly interactive and informal. The support provided by both subject tutors and other academic staff is thoughtful and creative, focusing specifically on individual needs and learning styles.

Each student receives an element of one-to-one tuition as part of their teaching programme. Students are encouraged at every stage to take an active part in the learning process. There are few rules, but a culture which encourages industry and a growing sense of responsibility. This is achieved by thorough exam-specific teaching and close attention to the needs of the individual student, enabling reinforcement of understanding and attention to areas of weakness.

This highly-individualised pedagogy appeals to students across the whole educational spectrum. The focus of individual learning styles is equally beneficial to both high achievers who may feel constrained by the restrictions of their A-level syllabus and would like to extend their studies in preparation for applications to the most competitive degree courses and to those who have struggled with the demands of intensive examination-oriented courses and require additional support with essay-writing or study skills.

We also offer an enormously successful BTEC programme, delivering the Diploma, equivalent to two A-levels, over one year or the Extended Diploma, equivalent to three A-levels, over two years

The programme is assessed entirely through coursework produced on laptops and is offers a genuinely stimulating alternative to A-level studies for students who have struggled to realise their full potential in examination-oriented classes and giving them the opportunity to access competitive higher education courses from a wide range of fields.

As the parents of one of our recent graduates said on receipt of very high BTEC grades: “We are so delighted and cannot thank you and the college enough for igniting this flame. Ed has thoroughly enjoyed the course and has had nothing but full praise for you and your approach towards delivering the syllabus.”

As befits our ethos, we do not offer open evenings but welcome individuals who are keen to learn more about the opportunities the college has to offer to make an appointment to discuss the options with a member of the academic team.
