Art for Art’s Sake

Just as July heralds the arrival of Wimbledon fortnight, so it seems the months of May and June signal the blossoming of art exhibitions across Oxfordshire and the country as a whole

Life drawing to the extreme!

On 8 June the 247th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition once again opened its doors showcasing the best in artistic talent, much of it from our shores. This year’s exhibition has been curated by an artist himself, Michael Craig-Martin RA, who has used his talents to inject colour, energy and vibrancy into the galleries in what is a truly spectacular show. A must see show for sure.

Closer to home, Oxfordshire Artweeks has just finished. Established in 1981 with the first exhibition in 1982, the aims were simple: to bring art and its appreciation to a wider audience by exhibiting locally across the region with the artist often on hand to provide a little insight into the pieces on show.

It has proved hugely successful and popular with artists throwing open their homes, gardens, sheds, barns and just about anywhere to showcase their art. Talent and creativity abounds with striking and original art pieces. If all of this inspires you to pick up some charcoal or fine art brushes, then the Oxford Art Prize might just be for you.

In its inaugural year, artists from across Oxfordshire have been invited to attend a mass art event ‘en plain air’ everyone producing their own interpretation of the serene in front of them at the same time!

No pressure then.

This veritable flurry of artistic creativity can all be seen at the O3 Gallery and the Oxford Town Hall Gallery until then end of August when the judges will decide on the winning pieces. As our pictures show, some people have taken life drawing to the extreme!

The Ashmolean rocks!

The collection of British drawings and watercolours in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is one of the largest and most important in the world.

The current exhibition in the museum, Great British Drawings, shows more than 100 works by some of the country’ s greatest artists, many of the works being shown for the first time.
