With the BMW M6, we’ve never quite understood ‘why’

It is very powerful, very fast, an amazing looker, and beautifully finished inside and out. Yet this is not a ‘purist’ car. Size and weight are the main reason. It is not easy to punt around such a big car through a challenging winding road with attitude. This one weighs just over two tons, and due to its size and width you can feel the weight big time, but then the M6 has prodigious grip and expert M chassis tuning, so the only thing you’ll need to complain about is your neck muscles fighting the G-force.

The M6 Convertible looks expensive because it is. £97,300 to be precise, but that’s the price for quality. Logic aside, it has certainly proved a winning recipe; so much so that BMW have made nothing more than a few external cosmetic changes and uprated interior trim to make a grand car even grander. The M6 is powered by a twin turbo charged V8 engine that catches breath on hard throttle to rocket you up to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds and constrains its top speed to 155 mph. There’s a seamless process on the way there due to the super smooth changes of the excellent 7 speed dual clutch gearbox.

Two performance upgrades are possible, one up to 567 bhp, and if you need to be rocketed to Mars the 592 bhp Competition Package will sooth your hunger for excitement, and easily compensate for a lacking sex life. Whilst living with a not unreasonable 239 g/km of CO2, achieving an average 27.7 mpg is ‘not bad’ for this level of performance.

What you will certainly have is credibility and prestige. Credibility because BMW know how to make keen driver’s cars. Some have said the slight vagueness of the electronic steering detracts from that, but the car delivers, and to many that’s what matters most. Prestige comes courtesy of the name but more so the M6’s grand and salubrious looks. You can imagine yourself on the Côte D’Azur even if your nearest beach is Skegness. At the Côte D’Azur you are part of the crowd; at Skegness you are the Don. Either way, you’ll smile each time you pick up the keys…
