Back British farming this season!

Back British farming this season!

Autumn brings a great seasonal bounty, with apples and pears, a wide selection of vegetables and prime British meats such as lamb and beef in our shops
"Farming is worth almost £10 billion to the economy!"

Farmers and growers can provide us with three quarters of foods that can easily be produced in our temperate climate

Around seven tenths of land is farmed and so by buying British we’re all helping to support our living, working countryside. Our beautiful countryside produces quality food, boosts our health and wellbeing and underpins a vibrant rural tourism sector. Farms and horticultural units offer incredible educational opportunities too. Farming delivers all these benefits, supports 3.5 million jobs and it’s worth almost £10 billion to the economy!

Almost all of us are in a hurry when we’re shopping, but the NFU (National Farmers’ Union) hopes to remind consumers of these very good reasons to choose British food. Supermarket shoppers can look for the Red Tractor logo. Products bearing this mark are farmed and packed in the UK and have been independently inspected at every critical stage.

Red tractor standards cover everything from food safety to animal welfare, the environment and plant health.

Challenge your local supermarket if British food is not given pride of place on shelves. Shopping in a farm shop or at a farmers’ market means you can easily buy local food and often meet the producer, hearing the story behind your food and the producer’s production standards. When eating out, ask caterers about the provenance of food on the menu –is it British?

So if you want great British food tomorrow, buy British food today! By backing British farming, you’re supporting an industry that really matters to each and every one of us. Make sure you buy the ingredients for a great British Christmas dinner this year too – from the traditional root veg, Brussels sprouts and potatoes to the farmfresh turkey. For a bubbly atmosphere select English sparkling wine, local apple juice or real ale!
