Christ Church Cathedral School, Oxford
Christ Church Cathedral School is a place of aspiration. This year we have achieved an extraordinary set of scholarships to senior schools, including an
Academic scholarship to Magdalen College School (MCS), Music scholarships to MCS, Winchester and Harrow, and a Sports Scholarship to MCS.
And these are the tip of the iceberg: eleven boys out of a total of 19 gained awards to senior schools.
Our school is rightly known for its friendliness and family atmosphere, but much of our pupils’ manifest happiness is predicated upon them seeing themselves succeeding in all walks of life, especially academically.
The journey starts in our Nursery, which is housed in the unrivalled surroundings of the 15th century building where Cardinal Wolsey stayed and the Crime writer, Dorothy L Sayers, was born. Our Nursery has a charming garden overlooking the glorious Tudor frontage of Christ Church itself. The rooms are of an intimate size, which means the children always feel calm, and our Montessori-led programme ensures that early learning and life skills are acquired quickly.
From there, the boys move on to our Pre-Prep, where our warm, dynamic teachers ensure that learning is rigorous but enjoyable. The children benefit in a myriad of ways from our being part of Christ Church.
Recently our Pre-Prep, clad in their Mad Hatter hats, went over to the Dean of Christ Church’s Garden, the garden upon which much of the Alice in Wonderland story is based. Some of our older boys recently performed in the College Cathedral Garden production of Medea. We enjoy the most beautiful playing fields in England - Merton Field – and this year have created an enchanting woodland classroom, with nesting boxes and homes for birds and animals, in Christ Church Meadow.
Our school is in one of just two Grade 1 historic landscapes possessed by a university college, as designated by English Heritage. For our pupils, spending their formative years in such an environment is transformational. We are, however, aware that they will most likely live to see the 22nd Century. With this in mind, we nurture the necessary adaptability and willingness to embrace change that that striking fact implies.
