Green Flag Premiership Rugby Twitter Competition!
"That gave us the confidence we could beat anyone"
Living legends of the rugby world, Martin Corry and Kyran Bracken are gearing up to support the boys in the forthcoming World Cup.
They’ve teamed up with Green Flag to bring competition winning fans an experience they won’t forget.
The Rugby World Cup is fast approaching. Just how big can it be?
Martin Corry: In terms of interest, I think this is going to be unprecedented. We’ve shown with the Olympics how big these events can get. You’ve seen with the demand for tickets – it’s huge.
And this is not just going out to the rugby market. Everybody wants to be a part of this. And people who can’t get to events, there’s going to be so much more to do to get this World Cup experience. Hopefully the England team can back that up and you can have the two, but it’s going to be a phenomenal event.
Of course, you know all about winning the World Cup – how do you look back on that?
Kyran Bracken: Really fond memories, obviously. We were only a few years into being professional so we were still finding our way, but we had a great bunch of players that came together at the right time. I’d say that 50% of the players were coming to the end of their careers, so the timing was right, it was just the right time to have all these players in the team.
Winning in Australia and New Zealand before the World Cup really helped, that gave us the confidence we could beat anyone. And it was great to be involved in that England team. A lot of us had come from the amateur era so we knew what it was like to do a different job, so it was great for us and for English rugby.
So what does the Green Flag competition involve?
Martin Corry: Green Flag are obviously the national breakdown provider and they are a sponsor of Premiership rugby, so ahead of the 2015 final they are running a competition for its social media followers.
What the chaps have to do is submit a memorable story on Twitter about a journey to a rugby game and you get a chance to win and the prize is the winner and four friends get on a very posh bus with me, Kyran and Neil Back and get a private box for the game and enjoy bucket loads of food and drink.
What type of stories are you expecting people to send in? They might be a bit risqué!
Martin Corry: Whatever stories they put on social media I would expect Green Flag to submit the story, so I wouldn’t suggest too many X-rated stories coming in if they want a chance of winning. But I’m having a look at them all so I’ll have a good old giggle!
How much of an advantage is it for England to be at home? There’ll be added pressure, surely.
Martin Corry: I think home advantage is going to be priceless for us. I think if you look at the games, you can almost copy what I said about the Premiership with the internationals, it’s so tight. Even with England’s pool with Australia and Wales in it. But it’s not a given we’re going to qualify from the pool. If you look at the games on their own in isolation, they are so close that if you’re picking a winner this far out you’d have to be going with the team that has home advantage.
Do you think the World Cup can capture the public’s imagination?
Kyran Bracken: Rugby is a game that most people don’t get to play or get involved with it. And now is our chance to advertise to the British public this wonderful game of rugby.
Some people at school don’t play it, I was lucky because my school did. It’s obviously way behind where football is. With football you can just go outside to the park and have a game, with rugby you can maybe play touch rugby, but that is very different.
I think it’s our opportunity to advertise the game, it’s up and down the country so it’s not just at Twickenham. There will be some fantastic matches that will be keenly fought and very close, so it’s going to be a fabulous World Cup. This is our opportunity to get people into our wonderful game.
What kind of shape do you think the England team is in at the moment?
Martin Corry: Well, we beat Australia when they came over here, we beat Wales recently so we know we can beat them. Whether we will, time will tell. I think we’re in good shape, we have a very good squad, and a number of players that are competing for places, so yeah, it’s very exciting. We’ll see if they’ve got what it takes.
You’ve been out the game a while now, do you miss it?
Kyran Bracken: You do miss it, you forget how lucky you are to be in that environment with your comrades so to speak, in a brilliant sport having fun and preparing to go into battle every weekend is something I miss. But my body had had enough of that battle so that doesn’t miss it!
