High achieving at Oxford High

Head of Oxford High Junior School, Kate Gater, talks innovative teachers and the happy, confident girls thriving under their care
Kate Gater joined Oxford High as Head of the Junior School in January ‘16 just as the highly important ISI Inspection began

I joined Oxford High as Head of the Junior School in January ‘16 just as our highly important ISI Inspection began.

 

The outcome, that the quality of OHS pupils’ achievements is Exceptional with all areas receiving a rating of Excellent (the highest a school can achieve), gave me immense pleasure. It confirmed the reasons I came to Oxford High – to lead a school full of innovative teachers with happy, confident girls thriving under our care.

Girls joining Reception do no sit formal academic assessment (really, who can claim to accurately assess the academic potential of a child of four). They come from diverse backgrounds, countries, and nursery settings, all at different stages for their age. My team at Woodstock Road are specialists in early childhood education and how girls learn and develop. We pride ourselves on knowing the girls as individuals and see our role as enthusing them with a passion for learning via a play-based curriculum. Of course this includes the key building blocks of phonics and maths, but also discovering Mandarin and science.

This EYFS and KS1 stage is a platform on which to build future achievement as the girls head to Bardwell Road for Years Three to Six where we continue this personalised approach to learning. With an eye to the future and their transition to Senior School, we teach French from Year Two and add in more tailored Mandarin and Latin from Year Five.

The majority of our girls go on to Oxford High Senior School, with places confirmed to parents in Year Five. How can we be so certain of being a good match for Senior School so early? The answer is simple – we know each girl extremely well. We know whether she will continue her love of challenge, creativity and investigation when tackling GCSE and A Level studies and much of that stems from the impact and difference our Early Years’ specialists have on those early steps aged four.
