It’s a Wrap
So, you’ve slipped into that gorgeous gown and you’re ready to party, but, let’s face it, it’s cold outside. You need something round your shoulders. Also if you are a little self-conscious at the beginning of the evening in your bodycon dress, a loosely draped stole or wrap can give you a shot of confidence (a ‘bodycon’ dress is, sadly, not one that cons your body into thinking it is a different size from what it really is, but a ‘body-conscious’ – ie tight-fitting – one).
You can look pretty in pink with an Accessorize boucle stole for £19, conjure up the green of the woodlands with the Forest Velvet devore evening stole £40 from East, or go retro with a Beatrice cape for £99 from Phase Eight. But if the occasion is dressy you might want to fetch the fur.
Many of us think that fur is best left on the mammals who grew it, but these days it’s easy to have fun with faux (we don’t say ‘fake’ any more, girls) which comes in all manner of colours to match your outfit and is light and easy to manage. Miss Selfridge have stoles in ice blue, pale green, petrol, blue and brown, each for £25 and soft as the rabbit ears they resemble. Mint Velvet offers a sweet faux fox tail scarf for £39, and you can even pick up a stole or wrap in your weekly supermarket shop – George at Asda does a cute grey faux fur shrug for just £14, while F&F has a berry-coloured one for £20. I haven’t yet found one at Lidl or Aldi but it’s only a matter of time…
Need warmth outside but happy to shrug off your faux fur when you reach the party? Go for one of the jackets, coats and capes in the shops this season. Taller women can look anything but abominable in the Yeti coat for £110 from Long Tall Sally, you can be two-tone with a jacket from Star by Julien Macdonald at Debenhams for £99, Monsoon gives you the Milly Fur Cape for £69, or you could opt for a Dalmatian coat from Miss Selfridge for £80. You don’t have to be Cruella de Ville to pull this one off.
You could, of course, just sweep in wearing a Jaeger double-face herringbone cape for £450.
You can even team your faux fur wrap with a bag. Yes, everything is furry these days. This season House of Fraser is selling a black, faux fur Therapy bag for £35, and if you are cool enough to combine fashion with irony you might like the New Look’s pink faux fur cat bag £19.99. Also available as a little black cat. Miaow!
Not your bag? Fear not; there is plenty more to clutch on to like the Accessorize Charlotte Tassle ziptop for £35, complete with useful shoulder strap so that you can eat and drink and not lose your bag, all at the same time. Also worth a look is Next’s snake box clutch (no snakes were hurt in the creation of this bag) for £22.
