Marco's New York Italian

Original ‘enfant terrible’, the Godfather of modern cooking, Marco Pierre White, is to open a new restaurant in Oxford

Dubbed the original ‘enfant terrible’, the famed celebrity chef and restaurateur will open a Marco’s New York Italian, in the Mercure Oxford Eastgate Townhouse, on 12 February.


 

With 90 covers, the restaurant replaces the hotel’s previous venue which was called the High Table Brasserie and Bar and will serve Marco’s take on American-Italian food.

News of the restaurant’s opening follows a deal between Black & White Franchising and the hotel’s owner, who will run the new restaurant under a franchise agreement. Work to convert the existing restaurant and bar areas is already well under way.

Once open, visitors will be able to choose from a selection of fresh pastas, steaks, seafood, burgers and handmade pizzas. The restaurant will replicate the hustle and bustle of a classic New York Italian restaurant, appealing to those looking for a relaxed, fun place to eat that has the added attraction of having the provenance of Marco Pierre White.

Located on the High Street in the heart of Oxford city and opposite Magdalen College, the new restaurant will be ideal for hotel guests, business people, tourists and day trippers exploring the city’s colleges and museums.

Built on the site of a 17th century Coaching Inn, C.S Lewis became engaged to his girlfriend in the restaurant and JR Tolkien, who lived next door, ate at the hotel daily.

General Manager, Peter Watt said: “This announcement is great news and will strengthen the appeal of the hotel as well as its history.

“Sitting at the heart of Oxford, the hotel is popular with a range of customers including business people, tourists and day trippers. “The presence of a Marco Pierre White restaurant will bring an exciting new vibe to the hotel and will sit well with those looking to do business in a relaxed setting as well as visitors taking in the many attractions that are right on our doorstep.”

Black and White Franchising has partnered with Marco Pierre White to roll out two of his restaurant brands: Steakhouse Bar & Grill and Marco’s New York Italian.

Owner and Chairman, Nick Taplin, commented on this new deal: “The idea behind this restaurant is to create an environment where people can sit and enjoy their life, where diners can have a good time and enjoy traditional Italian favourites at any time of the day.
