Learning should be an adventure, first in the main curriculum

In school life, the primary years are not just the first years but the key years – a time for establishing life-long patterns of learning and a time for acquiring the passion for exploration and discovery. The primary years are a time for adventure.


 

Learning should be an adventure, first in the main curriculum. Numeracy, literacy, the sciences, the humanities, computing, music and drama, sport, languages – each subject area provides opportunities for investigation and discovery, independently and by working with others.

Recognition is important, and is given through awards for achievement and progress. Achievements are posted on the Wonderful Work board and recorded in The Rye Times. Successes are also recorded in the termly Newsletter and the annual Rye St Antony Magazine, together with postings throughout the year on the intranet and the website.

Music showcases throughout the year and twice termly Tea Concerts give opportunities for soloists and ensembles to perform before live audiences. Trinity Term drama productions have given major opportunities in the performing arts to create shows of distinction, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2014.

The excellent resources of the Sports Centre, together with the school’s outdoor courts, pitches and swimming pool, give scope for many inter-house and inter-school matches, and everyone is encouraged to develop an interest and talent in sport.

Our school grounds are especially beautiful with the lawns, woodland and handsome houses of two estates created in the 1890s along the crest of Headington Hill. It is hard not to be appreciative of this setting and the importance of conserving it, and we value our membership of the Woodland Trust and our commitment as a Forest School.

Whatever the setting, the aim is to make learning an adventure. In order to have successful adventures, it helps to keep track of the journey. Continuous teacher assessment helps provide a clear understanding of individual progress. Pupils are taught to assess their own learning so that they can recognise what they have done, see where they are and plan where they are going next.

‘I too will something make and joy in the making’ are the words of our school song and they are central to our school philosophy. Every child is helped to discover life as an adventure through which is to be found the joy of learning and the joy of living.
