A stunning 54% of Oxford High School Sixth Form achieved a clean sweep of A*/A grades this year at A Level
100% of our students applying to study Medicine were successful and 100% of those girls who studied for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) gained A*grades. This meant that we are the leading school within the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) and the leading girls’ school in Oxfordshire for A Level results.
More than 20% of those starting university in September are heading to Oxbridge to study fascinating subjects such as Chemistry, Anglo Saxon, Norse & Celtic, English and Maths. 85% gained places at their first choice of university, mostly Russell Group, to study everything from Medicine in Madrid, Classics at St Andrews and Computer Visualisation & Animation at Bournemouth.
What was particularly striking this year was the correlation between pursuing a passion for a specific subject and achieving academic success. The subjects in which girls achieved 100% A*/A covered a hugely diverse range including Physics, Further Maths, Ancient Greek, Mandarin, German and English. We firmly believe this is evidence of the power of young women making their own choices for academic research, combined with one-to- one supervision from staff who share their passion for the subject. Our students study what they love and they can choose from an unparalleled range of 26 A Level subjects.
Their timetable is then built around that choice, rather than the girls having to choose between blocks of subjects. To continue our drive for innovation, we have launched a brand new 360 Programme for Sixth Form studies from 2016. This is a three-part programme encompassing Academics, Electives and Perspectives. At Oxford High, most girls start out studying four linear A Levels and, now uninterrupted by AS levels in Year 12, we felt that the opportunity to feed our students’ appetite for deeper, richer learning by building a programme around their interests was just too good to miss.
As you would expect from a school with our heritage, academic rigour is central to the programme. The Academics course includes all 26 subjects and beyond into the EPQ. This allows students the chance to study a chosen topic in-depth, and demonstrate intellectual curiosity, independent learning and initiative – all skills highly valued by leading universities.
The Electives will reflect the girls’ interests and passions, allowing these to flourish. We have been working with the girls and teachers to co-create themes based around their ideas. The many suggestions so far include Berlin in the 1930’s, French cinema, Putin’s Russia, developments in neuro-science and surgical skills for beginners! Whilst some will be sixweek courses with a session each week, others will be one-day courses designed to complement or contrast with the Academics.
The third element is Perspectives – the nurturing of self-awareness, personal influence and wider understanding for each of our girls. They will consider their three spheres of influence – themselves, their community and their world. For each individual, there will be key modules in wellbeing, financial management, health, careers, sport and study skills.
In their local community, they will focus on leadership and volunteering within the school and beyond, via social enterprise and the charitable sector.
This gives them the chance to really make a difference in other people’s lives whether that is teaching science in a local primary school or our outreach projects, sports activities such as KEEN or Riding for the Disabled, playing music and spending time at the dementia café, working in local charity shops or at the Oxford food bank.
The final sphere of influence is the wider world beckoning these young women. Through our many connections with Oxford University, our alumnae and the GDST, our Sixth Formers can listen (and challenge!) visiting speakers, participate in visits, workshops and business internships to develop political awareness and a greater understanding of global issues. We will fully deploy our advantage of playing a leading part in a new elite hub of five GDST schools driving innovation and involving our students in new national networking events.
