The Citadel Express - Pathfinder Tours

Experience rail travel as it used to be and make magical memories from your local station

"‘Royal Scot’ will be diagrammed to head our rake of classic mark 1 carriages north over the 141 miles that seperate Crewe and Carlisle along the West Coast main line"

It has been quite a few years since Pathfinder has organised a steam hauled run that has featured the fearsome climbs to Shap Summit in both directions, coupled with a leisurely afternoon break in the Border City of Carlisle. This excursion puts that right!

Offering pick ups from the Thames Valley through the Midlands to Crewe diesel hauled (DB Cargo class 67 expected), the recently returned to main line ex-LMS 4-6-0 no.46100 ‘Royal Scot’ will be diagrammed to head our rake of classic mark 1 carriages north over the 141 miles that seperate Crewe and Carlisle along the West Coast main line.

Running by way of Warrington, Wigan, Preston and Lancaster, with a number of smaller summits encountered, it is north of Carnforth that the bigger gradients are found, giving both the footplate crew and locomotive the big challenges, culminating in cresting Shap Summit itself at 914 feet above sea level. The rest of the way to Carlisle is then mainly downhill, with an arrival expected late lunchtime, followed by a break of around three hours in this historic city, with its attractions, shops and eateries conveniently sited not far from the Citadel station.

Late afternoon will find passengers, ‘Royal Scot’ and footplate crew all refreshed and ready to do it all again but in the south bound direction, with a further 141 mile undulating run to Crewe before 46100 completes its days run, leaving the train to return diesel hauled to the originating stations to complete a lovely day out.
