Tinnitus: What is it & How Can I Get Help?
What is tinnitus?
It is any sound that a person can hear from within their body rather than from an outside source. Although tinnitus is often described as a ringing sound it can be heard in many ways such as buzzing, humming, grinding or hissing.
What are the causes of tinnitus?
A build-up of earwax, a middle ear infection or a problem with your inner ear can sometimes be responsible. Also a sudden very loud noise or a sustained loud noise may cause a tinnitus attack like loud music or loud industrial work places. Tinnitus is also often associated with a reduction in hearing ability.
What is the treatment of tinnitus?
At the moment there is no single treatment for tinnitus that works for everyone. If an underlying cause can be found such as a build-up of earwax then micro-suction earwax removal may be the answer. If a specific cause cannot be found then the focus will be on helping the sufferer to manage the condition. There are various ways to do this and one could be to wear custom made instruments that can be used to play tones which cancel or mask the tinnitus sound.
