Volkswagen Passat is European Car of the Year
We recently tested the VW Passat in these pages and were impressed by its exceptional quality and refinement, unaware that it was soon to assume such an accolade!
The Passat is a completely new model built on VW’s accomplished MQB platform, yet its evolutionary Passat design cues are clear. The Passat’s quality and functionality played a big part in the Judge’s decisions on a car that is lighter yet stiffer than its predecessor. A very roomy and comfortable cabin is ‘home from home’ for families and long distance business use, the latter destined for the majority of sales.
The Passat comes with a wide range of fuel efficient engines; top choice will be the twin turbo 2.0 TDCI with 240 hp combined with a new and highly impressive 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. Petrol engines start with the economical1.4 TSI.
And there’s more to come. We’ll soon be seeing a plug-in hybrid version, the GTE, with a range of 50km in electric mode, alongside the option of a combination of petrol-electric hybrid power generating 156 horsepower and a 1.4 petrol engine achieving 218 hp overall.
