What’s New Pussycat? An Interview with Ashley Roberts
You guys have the best high street in the world!
Ashley Allyn Roberts left the Pussycat Dolls in February 2010 and since then has pursued not only a solo singing and acting career but also has been a popular choice on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! And Dancing on Ice
Ashley recently appeared as a presenter on This Morning and here she is after her shoot as ambassador for fashion brand Goldigga talking about her career, her fashion style and her tips for a variety of occasions…
Ashley, what fashion items can you not live without?
My skinny jeans and black leather jacket.
What are your top style tips for getting ‘red carpet ready’?
Always take a picture before you leave, to see how it comes out on camera and see if you’re feeling it. That’s one trick that I would definitely recommend
Do you have a top styling tip for a dinner date?
Something that you feel comfortable but confident in, so don’t wear something that you’re going to be fidgeting with or something that you can’t cross your legs in…something that feels feminine and cute but doesn’t give too much away.
Top styling tip for festival fashion?
Have fun and be playful. I think that people make fun of the fact that you go out and buy clothes that you’d never usually buy but why not? Dress up, its fun, it’s getting to play around and have a good time, so yeah just be creative.
Top styling tips for a holiday?
You can’t under-pack! Be ready for anything, you never know what’s going to happen. So have layers – bathing suits, cover ups, jeans, tops and a good sweatshirt.
How would you describe your style?
I’d say I’m like the girl next door who could probably beat you up! I’m girly but I like to mess it up with a leather jacket. If I do anything too feminine, I like to put a masculine twist on it.
They say confidence comes from within but is there a particular outfit or accessory that gives you confidence?
Yeah man, to me it’s like a black leather biker jacket and skinny black jeans. You can throw on some heels or some flats, you can just rock a white tee or you can do something with a pattern underneath. It’s easy to run out the door, I feel good no matter what.
What’s your favourite daytime outfit?
It depends on the weather. If its summer time then I do enjoy a dress, then you can wear flats and just sit in the park, its breathable, you can go and have fun.
What’s your favourite evening outfit?
High waist black skinny jeans and a top.
What advice would you give to someone in terms of complimenting their figure?
Use your assets, enhance the good stuff.
What advice would you give to girls who are seeking fashion on a budget?
You guys have the best high street in the world! Just go down there and have fun, they have the best deals and really fun clothes. The thing is, trends are changing all the time so you can buy fun stuff and then throw it out, or give it away and get new stuff.
What colour do you like to wear the most?
Unfortunately it is black, I’ve been told I need to wear more colour. I do like colour on the red carpet. I like when I’m dressing up to have a bit of fun with colour but in my day to day life I tend to stick to black and white and simple colours, but then again if the sun comes out it does change the whole vibe. So then I want to throw colour on and have fun during the summer with patterns or bright bold colours, I love a bold lip.
What’s your favourite trend at the moment?
I guess what’s great about fashion right now is it’s so intermixed, you’re able to do some much more and be eclectic in who you are, you can dive in and divulge in different areas of your personality. I’m open to trying the new bell bottoms trousers and I love the double denim, that’s always fun.
What other celebrities do you look to, for style inspiration?
Nicole Richie is one of my ‘faves’. I like that she has an edginess but still keeps it classy. I like the way she combines different styles, she’s probably my number 1.
What’s your favourite item from the new range that you’ve been shooting today?
I’m really loving the bold prints for summer. When the sun comes out they’ll be really nice. I like the denim dress as well, that was really fun.
What’s the best thing about working in fashion?
I get paid to dress up and have fun, so it’s pretty awesome.
And has fashion always been important to you?
It’s a way of expressing yourself and so I think it is important because it’s a way that you can choose how to express yourself to the world.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t take yourself too seriously! Chill out and relax!
What is the biggest fashion mistake you’ve ever made?
Oh god I’ve made some! It happens, that’s the thing – if you’re going to have fun with fashion, you’re going to make mistakes sometimes but that’s a part of it. I think with the Pussycat Dolls we definitely had moments when we really hit it on the mark and then moments when we really didn’t! So looking back at those, maybe it was in fashion at the time but I look back and I’m like OMG!
What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever been given?
There has to be a feeling with fashion, you have to put on whatever it is that you’re wearing and it has to bring something out of you, you have to feel good and confident. Also trust in your instinct and put on what makes you feels the best.
What do you do to relax?
If I’m near the ocean I like to go to the beach. I listen to music, I also do yoga, I really enjoy hot yoga and I like to do some reading as well.
What are your five key holiday essentials?
Sunscreen, bathing suit, a fun dress, popping lip colour and sunnies.
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Anywhere tropical, which I’m trying to manifest right now. Sitting on a tropical beach with a Pina colada in my hand and maybe a hot man walking by.
Did you do much of the festival circuit this year?
I was touring all summer so I didn’t really have much chance.
Which festivals are your favourite?
I haven’t been to any! I mean I’ve preformed at some back in the day like V festival and some others but I’ve never gone to enjoy it and just be an audience member.
If you hadn’t pursued a music career what you would you be?
When I was a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist just because I loved the ocean. I didn’t even really know what it meant, I was just like I want to be in the ocean and swim with the dolphins and be a part of the sea. I definitely love animals so maybe something to do with that.
Do you have any superstitions before you perform or go on a TV show, do you have a routine?
No I don’t actually. If anything I’ll be going over my choreography or my lines or thinking about moments that I need to hit, so I just run through what’s going on. I do visual stuff a lot, so I just visualise what’s happening.
Who would you love to do a musical collaboration with?
The guy who’s singing on the radio right now, Justin Timberlake. Omg to sing with JT…if I could ever do a collaboration with him. He’s married now with a kid on the way but the dream is still alive!
What would be your career highlight so far?
I’ve had some good ones I have to say, I’ve been really blessed so there’s been a couple, for totally different reasons. Getting a ‘moon man’ with the dolls was so amazing, because I watched MTV growing up and saw my favourite artists winning ‘moon men’, so when we got one it was awesome. When I was in the jungle I didn’t expect the reaction that I got and I proved so much to myself, that I could do things that I didn’t think I could do. The reaction I got from the British public was really rewarding.
How was the jungle?
It was insane, it was really hard, harder than it looked because you’re just sitting around all day with nothing to do and you get so bored! There’s no stimuli.
I get it must be hard as people usually eat when they’re bored but you haven’t even got food to eat!
We had nothing but each other and the jungle and that’s it. So it’s a trip, it was tough.
What’s your favourite song at the moment?
I really like Sia’s Elastic Heart, and also the 50 shades of grey soundtrack. I’m a bit on the pop side, I was into Eric Hassel and the Miguel stuff for a while, Miguel did some stuff on Soundcloud which was pretty awesome. I’ve kind of been on the whole Taylor Swift pop album, I’m really enjoying it. I didn’t expect it, I didn’t really want to like her but I secretly do. Well now it’s not a secret anymore!
Favourite TV show?
I’m really late to the boat but modern family is awesome. I like guilty pleasure stuff like the housewives, I love True Blood and HBO Girls, that’s my favourite at the moment.
It used to be Tommy Boy because of Chris Farley, he was like my idol growing up. It jumps back and forth, I mean Bridesmaids, I Love You, Man, pretty much any epic comedies, anything old school, Anchorman I just put them on and do whatever.
How do you kill time when you’re working away from home?
I play with my dog, watch a lot of documentaries. It’s not something I normally do but I recently got into drawing and stuff, I bought these things, they’re not chalk but you can smudge them, I think they might be charcoal? I also like to find fashion magazines and pull out makeup and ideas for outfits and stuff.
What are the top ten things you couldn’t live without?
My dog, music, family, Mexican food, water, cell phone, camera, I don’t know if I can live without a filter these days. I put it on everything, it makes everything better! Home, sun, TV…
Who would you like to be stranded on a desert island with?
At this point I don’t know, someone who’s awesome and could show me a good time and make me laugh. I have a crush on that Theo guy from Divergent, he’s British but has an American accent for the movie.
What if you got stranded with him and he turned out to be a right plonker?! I’d pick someone like my best friend who I know is going to be cool.
Well I’d say someone like my best friend who’s a man and can turn me on and show me a good time!
Who would you hate to be stranded with?
Perez Hilton! I watched him on CBB and I was like how are they doing this right now because I would’ve lost my shit!
What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
I’m doing Saturday night takeaway at the moment, a few things in the pipeline, a little bit of television and campaign stuff.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Hopefully I’ll have a house by the water, I want to be by the sea, where that sea is I don’t know yet… with a man. I would like to have a successful business that’s creative and artistic. I probably wouldn’t mind starting a family. A bit of balance, a bit of work and family.
