The first concert of the Witney Music Society 50th anniversary season will be given by Martin Jones, who performed in the opening season when he was on the threshold of what was to prove a very successful career as a concert pianist.
Martin Jones was born in Witney and was a chorister at Magdalen College School then studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He has been one of Britain’s most highly regarded solo pianists since first coming to international attention in 1968 when he made his London debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and his New York debut at Carnegie Hall.
Since then he has continued to be in demand for recitals and concerto performances on both sides of the Atlantic. He is also a prolific recording artist and his many discs for Nimbus Records include the complete solo piano works of Mendelssohn, Brahms, Debussy, Grainger, Szymanowski, Stravinsky and Korngold. Martin played here again in 1975 and, to the committee’s delight, he contacted us in 2013 to say how much he would like to include Witney in a UK concert tour being planned to mark his 75th birthday in 2015. The committee was looking for just such a start to its own anniversary year.
